USC Year 11 Mock Trial

The University Senior College Year 11 Legal Studies Mock Trial Team won Round 1 of the Law Society’s Mock Trial Competition against Harvest Christian School on 8 March. University Senior College was representing the Defendant, Charlie Bowman, who was being sued in negligence for a car accident that occurred on a roundabout. The University Senior College Team successfully persuaded the judge to dismiss the claim against the Defendant and also won the round by 10 points.

The Australian Science Olympiads

The Australian Science Olympiads program is the ultimate science challenge for any Science student. It is a rewarding opportunity tailored for Year 11 students to stretch themselves way beyond school science through challenging exams, stimulating residential programs and international competitions in Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science and Biology. Therefore, to be selected to represent Australia at the International Science Olympiad and to be able to compete against the world's best in Science, sitting the Australian Science Olympiad Exams is the first step.

Through the looking glass

Congratulations are in order for University Senior College Year 11 student Janesia Stillwell who had her poem 'Through the looking glass' selected for inclusion in the December issue of the poetry journal 'The Junior Crow'.  Janesia’s was one of nine poems selected for the journal. According to the editor of ‘The Crow’ her submission will appear alongside the work of adult poets across Australia. Congratulations Janesia.

Creative Writing

Year 11 and 12 USC students, accompanied by Elly Pfitzner, attended a dynamic creative writing workshop held by The University of Adelaide’s Faculty of Arts. The workshop provided students with opportunities to refine their writing skills and work alongside Arts faculty. The session was well received and students thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Year 11 Ancient Studies Research Presentations

Students on campus

University Senior College Year 11 Ancient Studies students just took part in a university style academic poster presentation of Achaemenid Persian art, architecture and technology. They had worked collaboratively on a poster and talked about their research while answering various questions. Students also presented an individual pitch outlining their group objectives and individual research findings.

Research Project

Students on campus

USC students, who generally undertake the Research Project in Year 11, received truly excellent results when the subject was resulted in July this year.  A total of 189 students were enrolled and 57.4% of them achieved in the A band. A+ was awarded to 21% of students who demonstrated a particularly high level of self-directed and thoughtful research. In addition, four students were awarded a ‘perfect’ score, namely Amelie Ballestrin, Teresa Bueti, Artemis Bishop and Vraj Petal.

Year 11 Service Learning

Recently the Year 11 cohort deepened their service learning program via a presentation on authenticity from Lynne Moten, the College’s Service Learning Resident, and from some of their Year 11 friends who shared first hand stories of their experience of Afghanistan. It is through the telling of story that our understanding and tolerance grows. This program will continue and diversify into Year 12 for these students.
