Wear It Purple Day
The Wear it Purple Day celebrations at USC were planned largely by the Student Voice Group. We spent time reflecting on what we wanted to celebrate and advocate for in regards to LGBTIQ+ youth issues. It was challenging to balance celebration with advocacy as we wanted it to be a fun day but also spread awareness on queer issues.
We balanced this by creating an interactive and welcoming environment with blankets and pillows spread around. We made bunting, paint swatches with statistics, messages we wanted to spread, a playlist of music by queer artists and fairy bread to celebrate the day. Many students participated in a raffle, chalk drawings and banner making with friends. It was a rewarding experience to see the school community come together to celebrate and support LGBTQI+ youth.
It was great to see the many teachers and students stopping to read the colourful quotes placed around the school.
