These policies have been developed to inform students of the guidelines and expectations of being a student at USC.
- Rights and Responsibilities
At University Senior College we are committed to preparing students for successful transition between secondary and tertiary study. We aim to provide a cooperative environment that promotes the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, self reliance and a sense of self worth, and enables students to maximize their personal potential. We recognize that this involves not only the development of the students’ academic skills but also the students' capacity to accept responsibility for their choices and their actions.
Staff and students at University Senior College aim to:
- treat each individual with respect
- create a safe, secure and supportive learning environment
- follow a code of behaviour based on mutual respect
- encourage effective communication
- provide an environment that values success
Everyone at University Senior College has the right to:
- be provided with every opportunity for intellectual and emotional growth
- be treated with respect and take responsibility for treating others with respect
- privacy and confidentiality, consistent with safety and legal responsibility
- feel equal and be treated with equity according to need
- feel safe and cared for, and be free from verbal, physical, racial, sexual or emotional abuse
- seek and receive help, support or advice when needed
Everyone at University Senior College has the responsibility to:

- Attendance and Lateness
Classes should be regarded as appointments. It is necessary to arrive punctually and with the necessary materials for the class. Where possible, the College should be notified of a student’s late arrival prior to class. Breaks during classes will be 5 minutes. Students should return to class and be ready to start on time.
- A student is required to attend all timetabled lessons punctually. Should the student be delayed, we request that the College be advised on +61 8 8313 4988 as soon as possible.
- If, due to illness or other legitimate reason, a student is unable to attend College, a parent/caregiver is requested to contact the USC reception before 9:30am on +61 8 8313 4988. In case of illness, we recommend that a medical certificate is presented.
- International students/Homestay should contact Michael on +61 8 8313 4988.
- Student Expectations
Responsible behaviour includes:
- respecting the right of students to learn and teachers to teach
- interacting positively with others
- caring for the College and University facilities and resources
- acknowledging that our actions bring about consequences
Academic effort is expected from every student. Every assistance will be given to students encountering problems with their studies. Serious and protracted lack of effort is not acceptable and could lead to a performance contract being required or, eventually, to termination of enrolment.
In classrooms, laboratories and lecture theatres, students are expected to:
- be seated and ready to begin a few minutes before official starting time
- set all mobiles to silent; turn off iPods (or similar players)
- bring no food or drink to class – (water is acceptable)
In lectures, students are expected to:
- correctly indicate attendance by swiping their ID Cards – otherwise a text message is sent home to indicate non-attendance
- fill up seats from the front to maximize concentration and engagement
- participate as an active listener and ask questions as appropriate
- ask permission from the lecturer if you wish to record a lecture
These behaviours reflect our commitment to an adult-style learning environment, characterised by respect and consideration for others.
- Complaints Policy
USC is committed to the delivery of a high quality learning pathway and having structures in place to ensure every member of the school community feels safe and supported. It is recognised that, from time to time, grievances may arise and the following procedures are designed to assist in reaching a satisfactory resolution for students, parents/caregivers and staff. USC staff will work alongside members of the community to reach agreement on a suitable action plan for resolving issues or concerns.
If you wish to arrange a time to speak with someone about a grievance, it is a good idea to inform them of the issue in advance so that they are better able to provide information when the meeting takes place. If at any stage of these procedures you would like to have a support person present as an observer, it is important to negotiate such an arrangement prior to a meeting.
There are some grievances of a very serious nature, where a member of the school community may need to approach the Principal or Deputy Principal directly and immediately, but most grievances in a school can be resolved before taking such a step. A student or parent/caregiver can raise a concern or complaint if they think that the school or a member of the school community has:
- Acted unfairly or impolitely.
- Acted improperly.
- Failed to do something that was assured or anticipated.
Under such circumstances your concern or complaint may be about:
- Issues related to teaching and learning.
- The behavior, comments and decisions of staff often related to student conduct.
- A policy, procedure or practice.
- Bullying and harassment.
- Work, health and safety.
Some points to take into account if you wish to lodge a concern or complaint:
- Raise the concern or complaint as soon as possible and maintain confidentiality.
- Clearly identify the issue and communicate what outcome you seek.
- Provide in writing the key points of your concern or complaint.
- Focus on the facts or details of what has taken place and avoid personal or inflammatory comments.
- Act in good faith to achieve an outcome acceptable to all parties.
- In the first instance only discuss your concern or complaint with the people directly involved..
- Have realistic and reasonable expectations about what course of action is required to resolve the concern or complaint satisfactorily.
Neither the Minister for Education and Child Development nor the Department for Education and Child Development has any power to directly intervene in any complaints relating to the operations of a non-government school.
Students Parents/Care Givers Staff What can you do?
STEP 1:Think about the grievance carefully. The decision is yours and sometimes you may decide to do nothing.
Make a time to speak with the staff member involved.
Discuss your grievance and attempt to resolve the issue.
If you feel that the issue has not been satisfactorily resolved inform the staff member that you will be speaking with school leadership.
Arrange a time to speak with the person concerned.
Allow reasonable time for the issue to be addressed.
If you choose to proceed:
Speak to the person and make a time to discuss the problem.
- Tell the person how you feel.
- Ask them to help resolve the problem.
STEP 2:Make an appointment to speak with a member of the school’s leadership team. The most appropriate person may be the Year Level Dean or the School Counsellor. Discuss your grievance and attempt to resolve the issue.If you feel that the issue has not been satisfactorily resolved, inform the staff member that you will be speaking with senior leadership.
If the issue is not resolved speak to:
- Trusted colleague
- IEU representative
- School Counsellor
- Year Level Dean
- Deputy Principal
Ask for their support in addressing the grievance by:
- Speaking to the person involved on your behalf
- Providing support in meetings
- Monitoring the situation
- Investigating your concern
- Acting as a mediator
Talk it over with someone you trust, e.g.
- Your friends
- Your parents
- A trusted adult
- Your Mentor
- Year Level Dean
- School Counsellor
- Deputy Principal
Make an appointment to speak with the Deputy Principal or the Principal.
If you feel the issue has not been satisfactorily resolved, inform the Principal that you will be speaking with the Chair of College Council.
If the issue is not resolved within a reasonable period of time arrange to speak with the Chair of College Council.
If resolution is not reached to your satisfaction you should approach:

Phone the Principal's Assistant (+61 8 8313 4988) and arrange for an appointment to speak with Chair of College Council.
- Student Health
Students are to inform the College if they require regular prescribed medication at school. The name and phone number of the student's doctor must be recorded with College administration.
First Aid is available from USC Jordan Campus and USC Charles Street Campus.
If you are unwell and need to see a doctor, the University has a medical service available for USC students. Consultations are Bulk-Billed. Appointments can be made through University Health (8313 5050).
- Drug Policy
The University Senior College drug policy aims to:
- promote and maintain a health-promoting College environment in which the safety and welfare of all College community members is paramount
- provide the College community with information and education concerning drug-related matters
- provide the College community with procedures for dealing with drug-related incidents and problems
The policy is applicable:
- on the College premises
- on the University of Adelaide campus
- at functions or excursions organised by the College
University Senior College does not permit students while on the College or University of Adelaide campuses, at any College function or excursion to:
- smoke and/or possess tobacco products
- consume and/or possess alcohol
- deliberately inhale volatile substances (solvents)
- possess and/or use pharmaceutical drugs for non-medical purposes
- possess and/or use illegal drugs
- possess and/or use drug-related equipment, such as syringes, bongs or pipes (except in the case of lawful medical use)
The College has established procedures to deal with the identification and response to drug related issues.
Note that USC, the University of Adelaide and Rundle Mall are all smoke free zones.
Students who disregard this policy may incur a period of suspension and may, at the discretion of the Principal, have their enrolment terminated. If necessary, parents and/or police will be contacted..
- ICLT Guidelines
- Students should keep their work in their own folder on the server. They should also frequently (e.g. weekly) back up their work by either emailing files home or copying to a USB memory stick.
- Students are provided with 2GB to store files. Storage of files on the network is only provided for educational purposes.
- Students are able to access their files remotely from https://vpn.adelaide.edu.au using their USC login and password.
- If students need to change the settings of computers they must return computers to the default setting before logging off. Keyboards, etc. can only be moved after consultation with a teacher.
Students are provided with a printing allowance of 200 pages, at 10c per printed page for non-colour pages. The pages printed by students are monitored and it is the student's responsibility to keep this balance at an appropriate amount to ensure they can print when required. Additional print credits can be purchased from the Finance Officer, at the Finance Office. NOTE: An insufficient printing balance will not be an acceptable reason for failure to meet deadlines for assessments.
Students are provided with a personal USC email account (email@example.com) which provides a level of security with regard to viruses and privacy.
Students have unmetered usage of the internet for study related purposes. This applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and refers to any access of the internet, whether through USC desktop computers, or via wireless authentication on any personal devices.
Internet usage for purposes such as torrent downloads, streaming and any other material that doesn’t apply under the University’s Acceptable Use and Security Policy can, and will, still be monitored. Internet access may be removed if students step beyond the guidelines for acceptable use.

- Assessment Policy
Students at USC are bound by the SACE Board's policy on the supervision and verification of students’ work, especially in relation to summative assessment i.e. where marks count towards the final College assessment.
- Students, at the beginning of each year, read and sign a
SACE Board “Assessment Declaration for Students”
agreement to abide by the SACE Board's assessment policy.
- Students, at the beginning of each semester, will be given
a detailed statement of assessment policy and practice for
- All work submitted for summative assessment must be given,
in person, to the appropriate teacher on or before the due
date, unless the teacher explicitly agrees to other
arrangements. Work may be left in teachers' pigeonholes
provided it is processed, signed and dated by a member of
staff (franking machine at reception in USC Jordan Building,
or Level 2 Charles Street).
- A doctor's certificate is required if the student is absent for
a summative assessment.
- Up to the expiration of the due date for submissions, teachers may, at their discretion, give an extension of time. A doctor’s certificate in the case of illness or substantiated evidence in other circumstances must accompany requests for extensions. In these cases, a new deadline will be set.
- If the deadline for summative work is not met, teachers may
deduct marks in the first instance and award a zero mark
should the negotiated extension deadline not be met.
The student is responsible for negotiating, as soon as possible
with their teacher, opportunities to make up missed
- Each subject will require students to undertake a range of
tests during class. These will be used for summative
- Computer problems and failure to save or backup work done
on the computer are not sufficient reasons to extend
- Plagiarism will be treated seriously. It invokes the SACE Board
“Breach of Rules” process for dealing with cheating.
A student discovered submitting work, that is not their own,
without acknowledgement, will be awarded a zero mark and
may incur further disciplinary action.
The correct use of references is required in academic writing. Failure to acknowledge the work of others is plagiarism.In any of your work, references must be provided when you:
- quote, using the exact words of another author
- use diagrams and figures and tables taken from the work of another
- paraphrase, expressing the idea of another in your own words
- summarise the ideas of another

- Students, at the beginning of each year, read and sign a SACE Board “Assessment Declaration for Students” agreement to abide by the SACE Board's assessment policy.
