Stage 2 Music

Course Length: 20-credit (Made of a pairing of two 10-credit subjects)
Learning Area: Arts

Where does it lead?

Music offers students the opportunity to acquire and develop their creative and interpretive skills of music from a wide range of periods, styles and cultures. Not only does this prepare students for the study of music at the tertiary level, it also fosters qualities of confidence, self-discipline, imagination and self-expression.

It is assumed that SACE Stage 1 has been satisfactorily completed. Those students taking the performance options will already have considerable experience with their instruments, having undertaken private lessons.

What is in the course?

Two units of music must be selected from the following:

  • Musicianship
  • Music in Styles
  • Solo Performance
  • Performance Special Study
  • Composing and Arranging
  • Music Technology

Musicianship includes Theory, Aural and Musical Techniques, Harmony; Arrangement and Analysis.

Music in Context involves the study of two core topics and one free choice (school-developed topic), together with an individual piece of research.

Solo Performance and Performance Special Study involve the preparation and performance of musical works in front of an audience, while Composing and Arranging and Music Technology require project or folio work. These four subjects require private tuition which can be arranged through USC. Assessment only will be undertaken at USC for these subjects.

Assessment in Music depends upon the particular pair of subjects chosen.
